Revenue Protection Architecture™ is a framework created by Michelle Repash to identify where dental revenue becomes vulnerable before the problem appears in billing or accounts receivable.Instead of beginning with the unpaid claim, denial, adjustment, or aging balance, Revenue Protection Architecture™ looks upstream at the decisions, processes, data, documentation, claim submission, and oversight that shaped the financial outcome. The premise is simple: A/R is often where the problem becomes visible, not where it began.
Traditional revenue cycle management often focuses heavily on what happens after revenue has already entered the billing and collections process, including claim submission, denials, payment posting, follow-up, and accounts receivable.Revenue Protection Architecture™ looks earlier. It examines the upstream decisions, processes, data, documentation, and oversight that can make revenue vulnerable before the financial problem becomes visible. The goal is not to replace revenue cycle management. It is to understand why the problem reached the revenue cycle in the first place. In other words, recovery asks, “How do we collect this?” Revenue protection also asks, “Why did this happen, and what needs to change so it is less likely to happen again?”
Michelle Repash created Revenue Protection Architecture™ after decades of working across nearly every part of the dental revenue process and repeatedly seeing the same pattern: the place where a revenue problem became visible was often not the place where it began.Unpaid claims, growing A/R, unexpected patient balances, write-offs, and other financial problems often carried the effects of decisions and breakdowns that happened much earlier. That led to a different question: What if we stopped waiting for revenue to break and started examining what made it vulnerable in the first place?Revenue Protection Architecture™ grew from that question. It provides a way to look upstream, identify where the story changed, and strengthen the systems that shape revenue before the problem reaches A/R.
Revenue Protection Architecture™ looks upstream because revenue problems often begin long before they become visible in billing or accounts receivable.By the time a claim is denied, a patient has an unexpected balance, a write-off occurs, or A/R begins to climb, the underlying problem may have already passed through several parts of the revenue system.Looking upstream means examining the decisions, data, processes, documentation, and oversight that shaped the financial outcome before it reached A/R.A/R is where we read the ending. Revenue Protection Architecture™ looks for where the story changed.
Revenue Protection Architecture™ examines the parts of the dental revenue system that shape the financial outcome before problems become visible in A/R.That includes:Strategy: the rules, expectations, and financial decisions guiding the practiceFirst Contact: the information gathered and entered from the first patient interactionVerification: what is confirmed, missed, and communicated before treatmentDocumentation: whether the clinical record supports what is coded, billed, and defendedClaim Submission: how accurately the claim reflects everything that came before itOwner Oversight: whether someone is watching the system as a whole and identifying recurring riskRevenue Protection Architecture™ looks at how those pieces connect, because revenue is rarely shaped by one isolated step. It is shaped by the system.
